Lightfastness indicates the amount of average daylight hours an upholstery fabric is able to receive before showing signs of fading. The typical lightfastness year is 500 hours.
The main difference between the Outdoor Standard and Fadenomore™ fabrics lies in their dyeing process, as the colorful outdoor fabric pieces you're looking for are dyed at certain stage of textile manufacturing - either in yarn stage or in fabric stage.
The Outdoor Standard fabric is dyed after the fabric is made with white yarns, a process known as piece dyeing.
On the other hand, the Fadenomore™ fabric is yarn-dyed, meaning the yarns are dyed into specific colors before being woven into a color or pattern.
Traditional dyeing methods only add color to the fiber exterior, whereas Fadenomore™ fabrics’ performance characteristics are an integral part of the fabric, not an applied finish that would wash off over time.
In most cases, color fastness is better in yarn dyed fabrics. This means that color of the fabric does not fade away easily. You would not easily get color fading in yarn dyed fabrics. In terms of price point, yarn dyed fabric are in general costlier than piece dyed fabric.
Therefore, if you are looking for reliable outdoor curtains that meet all your basic needs, such as sun and weather protection and privacy, the Outdoor Standard collection is an excellent choice. This collection has been a popular choice for over a decade, with more than 500,000 of satisfied customers and 10,000+ 5-star reviews across various platforms.
However, if you live in an area where prolonged sun and UV exposure can be a significant concern for both your outdoor space and your loved ones, investing in the Fadenomore™ outdoor curtains may be a wise choice.
When outdoor curtains are exposed to UV rays for extended periods, the material can begin to break down. This can occur due to a chemical reaction between the dye or fiber in the fabric and the UV rays. As a result, the dye or fiber can break down, causing fading - a process known as "photo degradation."
While no fabric can withstand all UV rays indefinitely, a sun-resistant fabric should be able to resist significant fading for the expected lifetime of outdoor curtains.
Much like how you would use sunscreen to protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays, your outdoor curtains should also be equipped with their own form of SPF.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause the fabric to break down, leading to fading and a shorter lifespan. That's why it's important to choose high-quality outdoor curtains, such as our Fadenomore™ collection, that are specifically designed to withstand the elements and resist fading.
UV, which stands for "ultraviolet," is a form of light wave or radiation with a shorter wavelength than visible light but a longer wavelength than X-rays. UV rays are particularly good at penetrating through objects, which is how they can cause fading and other types of damage.
A UV/fade-resistant fabric is one that has been treated to withstand UV rays, which account for approximately 10% of the sun's light spectrum.
If you live in a very sunny part of the States (e.g. the southern regions), it’s even more important to look for sun and fade-resistant outdoor curtains and ask questions about how it will perform in your environment.
*The maps above by EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) show monthly average UV Index values for the United States during June and July.
To objectively determine a fabric's level of sun resistance, it is helpful to refer to independent industry standards. The most commonly used measure of sun resistance is "hours to fade," which involves testing fabrics in a lab using specialized UV lights. This process simulates years of sun exposure in a matter of days or weeks, and the fabric is observed to measure how long it takes for a noticeable color change to occur.
At KGorge, we go above and beyond industry standards to ensure the quality of our Fadenomore™ outdoor performance fabrics. We subject our fabrics to a variety of tests to ensure their durability and resistance to fading:
